1. Executive Summary
ArtConnect seeks $100,000 to fund 'Community Canvas,' a project designed to beautify public spaces in the Riverdale community through the creation of vibrant, large-scale murals and interactive art workshops. Over a 9-month period, we will commission local artists to create 5 new murals that celebrate the town's history, culture, and diversity. Additionally, we will organize a series of workshops and events to engage residents in the creative process, fostering a sense of pride and ownership. Our mission is to support local artists, enhance the cultural landscape, and bring art directly to the community in a way that is accessible, inclusive, and inspiring.
2. Statement of Need
Riverdale is a community with a rich cultural history, yet it lacks visible public art that reflects its vibrant spirit. Many of the town’s public spaces are underutilized and uninspiring, which detracts from the sense of community pride. Moreover, local artists often struggle to find platforms to showcase their work, and residents lack opportunities to engage with art outside of traditional gallery settings. By creating large-scale public murals and hosting interactive workshops, the 'Community Canvas' project aims to make art more accessible, foster cultural connections, and transform Riverdale's public spaces into dynamic, creative hubs.
3. Project Description
The 'Community Canvas' project will be carried out over a 9-month period, focusing on mural creation, community engagement through workshops, and public events. The project will include the following components:
Mural Creation: Commission 5 local artists to design and paint large-scale murals across different neighborhoods in Riverdale. Each mural will be created in collaboration with the community, reflecting local stories, cultures, and identities. Murals will be strategically placed in areas that need revitalization, such as building facades, park walls, and alleyways.
Art Workshops and Community Engagement: Host 10 art workshops that invite residents of all ages to participate in the mural-making process. These workshops will cover basic painting techniques, mural design, and collaborative art creation. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute elements to the final mural designs, creating a sense of ownership and pride in the finished artwork.
Public Art Tours and Community Events: Organize guided walking tours of the completed murals, led by the artists, to share the stories behind the artwork and celebrate the town’s cultural heritage. A grand unveiling event for each mural will be held, featuring live music, food vendors, and interactive art stations where attendees can create their own small-scale art pieces to take home.
4. Project Goals and Objectives
Goal 1: Enhance the visual appeal of Riverdale’s public spaces through public art.
Objective 1.1: Complete 5 murals by local artists in different neighborhoods by June 2025, transforming underused or neglected areas into colorful, inviting community landmarks.
Objective 1.2: Increase foot traffic in mural areas by 30% within six months of project completion, as measured by local business surveys and pedestrian counts.
Goal 2: Foster community engagement and participation in the arts.
Objective 2.1: Host 10 art workshops with at least 200 total participants, encouraging residents to learn about and contribute to the mural-making process.
Objective 2.2: Reach at least 500 attendees through mural unveiling events, art tours, and social media campaigns.
Goal 3: Support local artists by providing opportunities for creative expression and exposure.
Objective 3.1: Provide paid commissions for 5 artists, along with opportunities to present their work to a wider audience during public events.
Objective 3.2: Feature artist profiles and stories in local media, increasing visibility for their work and career.
5. Methods and Implementation
The 'Community Canvas' project will be executed in three phases over nine months:
Phase 1: Planning and Artist Selection (December 2024 - February 2025): Conduct a call for submissions, inviting local artists to propose mural designs that reflect the community’s culture and heritage. A panel of community members, local art leaders, and project staff will review submissions and select 5 artists. Sites for the murals will be chosen in collaboration with local businesses, government agencies, and property owners.
Phase 2: Community Engagement and Workshops (March - April 2025): Organize 10 interactive art workshops in community centers, schools, and public parks. These sessions will be led by the selected artists, allowing residents to contribute ideas and even paint sections of the murals under the guidance of professionals. The workshops will also serve as platforms for artists to engage with the community, explain their vision, and build rapport.
Phase 3: Mural Creation and Public Events (May - July 2025): Artists will begin work on the murals, incorporating elements suggested by workshop participants. Each mural will be completed over a 4-week period, with progress updates shared on social media and local news outlets. Unveiling events will be held for each mural, featuring live entertainment, food, and interactive art activities to engage the broader community.
6. Evaluation
The success of the 'Community Canvas' project will be measured using the following metrics:
Quantitative Metrics:
Number of murals completed, and total square footage of public art added to Riverdale.
Participation rates in workshops, public events, and guided mural tours.
Increased foot traffic and economic activity in areas surrounding the murals, measured through local business feedback and pedestrian counts.
Qualitative Metrics:
Feedback from workshop participants and attendees at public events, collected through surveys and social media interactions.
Media coverage and social media engagement (e.g., hashtags, shares, and comments) related to the murals and artists.
Testimonials from artists and participants about the impact of the project on their personal and professional growth.
